After the collapse of the Soviet Union, seedling production and nursery-plot facilities stopped functioning in Armenia. Current orchards are very old (30-40 years old) and farmers still are using old soviet technologies. Similarly Soviet era fertilizer-producing and fruit and vegetable processing factories have stopped operating and gradually the irrigation and agro machinery systems have started to deteriorate. Moreover, as a result of land privatization, both rural and urban dwellers became farmers regardless of their background and occupation. Contrary to the Soviet period, where a coordinated/planned approach was used in all sectors of the economy, these farmers are nowadays left to themselves with their lands and with all problems related to cultivation, irrigation and product-marketing.
In the first phase of this project, a nursery was established on 2 ha in Getap community of Vayots Dzor region which offers high quality fruit and decorative seedlings to the fruit/grape growers in the region and beyond. Also a demonstration nursery with seedlings produced from high quality hybrid rootstock was established with support of PUM.
